UMD Experience

  • All Engineering very intense and rigorous, you have to put in the work

  • Diverse classes

  • “Getting your money's worth”

  • Loving your major will help you through your classes

  • There are many different organizations that support students with diverse backgrounds

  • Classes grow small as you progress through your major and you will get to know your classmates more

  • Engineering is difficult but that doesn't mean that it is not for you but it takes to adjust to the demands of the major

  • There are many organizations that can help you get adjusted

  • Reach out to others and make study groups to help you get through tough classes

  • Tons of tutoring resources are available on campus

Internships

  • Career services

  • Corporate sponsors

  • University has tons of connections

  • Career fairs

  • Undergraduate research opportunities (not an internship but lots of experience)

  • Center for minorities has internship opportunities

Tips

  • (Take with a grain of salt) Don't stress about GPA like in high school. College is about life experience and joining clubs. Look at the big picture.

  • Time management. Don't wait to do assignments, try to do them ahead of time. Find a balance between school  life and your own life.

  • It's okay to not get into your major and just into school. DON'T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS.

  • You need to learn to work with a team. Learn to value your peers opinions.  You cannot work through engineering alone.

  • Engineering undecided allows for you to take your time to decide what type of engineering you want to take.

How to build a stronger application?

  • Being a more rounded student is more important than grades and tests. Do sports, clubs, volunteer work, leadership work . This makes you a stronger candidate for scholarships.

  • Find something you're interested in and find a leadership role. It's more important to be a larger part of one group than a small part of a lot.

  • Be important to your community. Be involved in your community.

  • Show passion in something

What role does geology play in civil engineering?

  • Multiple tracks in civil engineering (broad)

  • Ex: how runoff pollution affects water sources

Have you done any lab research for your major?

  • Tons of opportunities available

  • Email professors if you're interested.

  • Different labs on campus Greenhouse, wind tunnel, neutral buoyancy

What is the biggest motivation that keeps you moving?

  • Being passionate about the major

  • Engineers make big money

  • Job is definitely harder(in the sense that you're not solving made up problems, you're solving real issues)

  • Understanding some classes are just a gateway to your goal

How did you know the major was right for you?

  • Taking classes and finding a love for the subject

  • Don't think you need everything planned out, pick a path you're interested in you always have the option to change majors

  • College fairs

  • Talking to professors

  • Doing things around the house like fixing light bulbs, TV

If I did not start at the clark school can I still graduate in 4 years?

  • Yes but you'll need to look out for pre-requisite classes

  • If you transfer from a community college you might have to take an extra semester to graduate

  • Find out what classes transfer so you don't waste your time

What subjects are needed most for what you're learning?

  • A lot of math and physics make sure you're comfortable with the subject

  • For computer engineering physics, coding languages, algorithms, and math

Are civil and environmental different majors?

  • No, they are the same major but you can focus on either one even though it is blended throughout the course structure.

Final Advice

  • Sometimes you just gotta put yourself out there it really enriches the college experience.

  • Stay loose, don't focus too much on stressful things. Try not to get overwhelmed. When it gets time to apply to college make sure you apply early it gives you the best opportunities and takes the stress away.

  • Major in something you love and have fun.

  • UMD does not accept late applications

  • Get involved in your community
